“I want to do something for Earth Day”.
Is the thought that crosses my mind on the first of every April. Every year I swear that, this year, I will follow through on this thought. Every year I promise myself that I will plant that tree, or volunteer for that organisation. Every year something seems to get in the way. This year, I decided, was going to be different. Generally, when it comes to Earth Day plans, I put too much pressure on the day itself. Inevitably, it means if I do not accomplish something on that specific day I have failed to live up to my own self imposed standard. Which makes me feel, in simple terms, sad. And, because I leave my Earth Day planning to the last minute I always end up being busy on the 22nd. On top of this, April 22nd is also a loved one’s birthday. Let’s just say this date doesn’t always work for me. Taking all of the above information into account, I wondered how I could honour the spirit of this day, even if I cannot celebrate on the day itself? That eventually lead me to this idea - why not do a little thing for the environment each day leading in April up to the 22nd? This way I get to celebrate the Spring and the start of a new bright season (hopefully it stops snowing soon...), celebrate our Earth and all it gives us, and to get into the habit of doing a little good every day. It’s like counting down to Christmas but with fewer calories ingested and fewer religious overtones. Initially I wanted to make this massive list detailing what I would do each day. I soon realised that my need to over plan was kicking in violently, and would ruin my sense of drive and accomplishment. Instead I will let the mood strike me and will do something each day that fits into my schedule and my mindset. Success is inevitable when you’re inspired. I hope that this little project will inspire you to do the same, or something similar, or simply something. Whatever it means to you, I hope you can find joy in it. As well as my introduction to this plan, I count this post as - Day 1: Committing to Eco-Friendly Practices.
